The SPARES national mission to monitor antibiotic resistance publishes its report on antibiotic consumption in EHPAD (results for 2020-2022)

An essential report to better understand and act against antibiotic resistance! This is how is presented the report “Surveillance de la consommation d’antibiotiques en établissements d’hébergement pour personnes âgées dépendantes disposant d’une pharmacie à usage intérieur. Mission Spares. Résultats 2020-2022” recently published.

As a reminder, the national SPARES mission is one of the 5 missions of RéPIA, the network run by Santé Publique France. This mission monitors two complementary aspects of the fight against antibiotic resistance: antibiotic consumption and bacterial resistance.

This document relates to the data for 2020, 2021 and 2022 collected by the SPARES mission from 18% of volunteer nursing homes with an in-house pharmacy (PUI), whether autonomous or attached to a healthcare establishment (ES). In 2022, 444 volunteer structures took part, compared with 470 in 2021 and 491 in 2020. The main findings of the report are as follows:

  • A change in consumption during the pandemic period, followed by a rebound
  • A drop in fluoroquinolone consumption in the nursing home sectors of hospitals
  • Indicators that are still a long way from the targets set out in the national infection and antibiotic resistance prevention strategy for 2022-2025.

The data on antibiotic consumption presented in this document is intended to help identify targeted actions to be taken, and can provide assistance in targeting actions to improve practices at the level of each EHPAD.
