Each year, Santé Publique France produces indicators to estimate trends in the consumption of antibiotics in the outpatient sector in France, which accounts for more than 90% of total consumption of these drugs.
Following a gradual downward trend over the last few years and a sharp fall in consumption in 2020, a recovery was observed in 2021 and confirmed in 2022. In 2023, the downward trend observed prior to the Covid-19 epidemic will resume, both in terms of prescriptions (820.6 prescriptions per 1000 inhabitants per year in 2023) and antibiotic consumption. This fall could be due – at least in part – to a lower incidence of winter infections.

Santé Publique France is also making available an infographic based on this report. This infographic also shows that antibiotic prescriptions in the outpatient sector stabilised in 2023 after two consecutive years of increase. These figures place the trend in consumption in a pre-pandemic context, marked by a moderate but steady decline.
