The main results of the 2024 national survey on the prevalence of healthcare-associated infections and anti-infectious treatments in residential establishments for dependent elderly people (Ehpad) have recently been published.
The aim of this survey is to produce prevalence indicators for residents infected and treated with antibiotics in nursing homes, and to compare them with those from the previous survey carried out in 2016. It also aims to mobilise all healthcare professionals in nursing homes and prescribers in a surveillance project. Finally, the aim is to help improve the safety of care for residents and identify priorities for action to prevent the risk of infection and ensure the correct use of antibiotics.
The survey – which was carried out in 2024 and analysed data from 1,288 Ehpads including 102,166 residents – was coordinated at national level by Santé publique France in conjunction with the Réseau de prévention des infections et de l’antibiorésistance (RéPIA) and, at regional level, by the Centres d’appui pour la prévention des infections associées aux soins (CPias) and the Centres régionaux en antibiothérapie (CRAtb).
The results show a decrease in the prevalence of healthcare-associated infections compared with 2016, and stability in the prevalence of antibiotic treatments.
