Monitoring of antibiotic use and bacterial resistance: the SPARES and PRIMO RePIA reports have been published

The Réseau de Prévention des Infections et de l’Antibiorésistance (RéPIA) comprises five national surveillance and prevention units, led by Santé Publique France. The scope of these national surveillance and prevention missions for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and antibiotic resistance (AR) covers the entire patient care pathway: community care, social care homes and healthcare facilities.

Each year, the SPARES mission (Surveillance and Prevention of Antibiotic Resistance in Healthcare Settings) and the PRIMO mission (Surveillance and Prevention of Infections and Antibiotic Resistance in Primary Care and the Medical-Social Sector) publish a report on surveillance data relating to their areas of activity.

Two reports have recently been published. They are available online on the Santé Publique France website:

The monitoring of antibiotic use and bacterial resistance to antibiotics in healthcare settings, a task entrusted to the SPARES initiative since 2018, contributes to the national policy on controlling antibiotic resistance by generating information that supports the appropriate use of antibiotics and the prevention of cross-transmission. Its objectives are to enable each HC to describe and analyse its consumption and bacterial resistance, at the level of each department, in comparison with a comparable group of HCs, as well as to produce indicators at regional and national level.

The PRIMO initiative, meanwhile, aims to monitor and prevent antibiotic resistance and healthcare-associated infections in community care settings and the medical-social sector. The 2024 national data on antibiotic resistance in community care settings and nursing homes focus on three bacterial species of interest (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus).
