Publication of the WHO’s 2025 global report on antibiotic resistance surveillance

On 13 October 2025, the World Health Organisation (WHO) published its latest global report on antibiotic resistance surveillance. Unsurprisingly, the WHO warns of the rise of antibiotic resistance and calls for the development of new treatments.

This new WHO report presents a global analysis of the prevalence and trends in antibiotic resistance, based on more than 23 million bacteriologically confirmed cases of bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections and urogenital gonorrhoea. The data was reported by 104 countries in 2023 and by 110 countries between 2016 and 2023.

This document provides adjusted global and regional estimates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in 2023 for 93 combinations of infection types, pathogens and antibiotics. It also presents adjusted national estimates of AMR for 2023 for the main combinations of pathogens and antibiotics. It also tracks global and regional trends in resistance for 16 combinations between 2018 and 2023.

This report reviews progress in establishing AMR surveillance systems at the global and national levels since 2016 and presents a scoring framework for assessing the completeness of national data. Finally, it proposes priorities for action to strengthen surveillance systems and support national responses aligned with global goals.
